Level:

Certificate, degree.

Description:
This introductory unit caters for students who have not studied physics beyond Year 10 Science and those who have studied up to TEE level but need further preparation before they enrol in the unit M150 Physics for Science and Engineering I. It is recognised that many students undertaking this course will not be proceeding to further studies in the physical sciences, but have an interest in biological, environmental and everyday applications of physics. Hence, many of the topics studied will be introduced through practical examples or their application will be illustrated by reference to these area.
Topics covered include measurement, Newton's laws, planetary motion, forces as vectors, biomechanics, potential and kinetic energy, gravitational and electric fields, electric circuits, wave phenomena, light and the eye, sound, radiation and energy flow.

Assessment is by assignments, laboratory reports, test and final examination.

Prerequisites: A knowledge of elementary algebra and trigonometry is assumed (students without this background should consult with the course co-ordinator). Concurrent enrolment in M150 Physics for Science and Engineering I is not permitted.

Students who have successfully completed M122 Particles in Motion or M150 Physics for Science and Engineering I may not enrol in this unit for credit.
